## Challenge

The relationships between HIV risk perception, PrEP motivation, and objective PrEP adherence among South African women planning for pregnancy had not been characterized, limiting the design of effective adherence-enhancing counseling interventions.

## Solution

Target RWE's HIV team analyzed data from South African women in periconception PrEP studies to characterize how HIV risk perception relates to PrEP adherence patterns, identifying counseling targets for women whose risk perception may undermine adherence motivation.

## Impact

Understanding how risk perception shapes PrEP adherence in periconception South African women informs targeted counseling intervention design addressing risk perception misalignment.
