Factors Associated with Readmission in the US Following Hospitalization with COVID-19

Challenge

Following COVID-19 hospitalization, the rate of and risk factors for readmission were unknown in a large US population, limiting the ability to identify high-risk patients and design targeted post-discharge interventions.

Solution

Target RWE researchers analyzed hospital chargemaster data from 297 US hospitals to estimate readmission rates and identify clinical and demographic predictors among patients discharged alive from COVID-19 hospitalization.

Impact

Identifying that patients with chronic diseases and acute kidney injury face the highest COVID-19 readmission risk provides clinicians and payers with actionable evidence for targeting post-discharge monitoring.
